A note on attendance and workload: As with any introductory language class, this course will be work intensive and cumulative. Thus, regular attendance and keeping up with assignments and vocabulary will be crucial to your success. In general, you will be called upon to memorize 25 new vocabulary words per week plus new grammar, in addition to the effort involved in preparing daily assignments and keeping up old vocabulary. Our goal will be to cover all the basic grammar and master a vocabulary of 415 words over the course of the 2 semesters, that is all the words in the Hebrew Bible with 100 or more occurrences. This basic grammar and vocabulary will allow you to read most biblical prose with the assistance of a “Reader’s Lexicon.” My best advice for keeping up with this work is to schedule out for yourself 30 minutes each day just to work on vocabulary. We have set up computer labs B-200 and B-201 (as well as the computer in the language lab) with a vocabulary drill program (also downloadable off the internet for free from our Resources for Biblical Languages Page!) to help you in this constant task. I have also found that flashcards work well for this. In addition, plan to spend 1 hour to prepare for each class period (preparing the lesson for that day), and 2 extra hours per week specifically to study for the quizzes each Monday and Friday. That is a total of just under 9 hours of study time per week for this course – 3 hours of preparation for each class period. If you do this consistently through the year then you will certainly do well in this course (no doubt the same strategy would also work well in all your other courses too). For greatest efficiency, part of your daily half-hour on vocabulary (in addition to computer lab time) can be with flashcards during time otherwise wasted: standing in lines, in between classes, waiting for someone, riding in the car, etc. Carry them around with you and use them at every opportunity! If you find that by your scheduled time of the day you have already accomplished your task, then you can spend that time doing something else! To help you in your task, tutors will be available for regular group study sessions as well as individually by appointment to help you in preparing for classes and quizzes. If you schedule in your preparation time then, the tutors can help you with any questions you may have, and you may also benefit from the presence and support of your classmates. Work together, help each other, drill each other on vocabulary. If you develop a regular routine of this sort, you are much more likely to keep up and succeed in the course.
Our top student will be eligible for the Guerra Prize in Biblical Languages. Good luck!
